New project
2007-05-07

The Euroregional Center for Democracy launches the <Good Governance in Public Universities>, a new project part of the campaign for transparency in higher education initiated in Timisoara University Center.

The aim of this innitiative is to integrate the good governance framework based on accountability, transparency and effectiveness into the decision making and the management of education in the four public, state-funded universities from Timisoara.

The target groups and beneficiaries include members of the governing bodies from the state universities (West University of Timisoara, Politechnica University Timisoara, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Victor Babes, Banat University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine), representatives of student and youth organizations, students, teachers and staff, and other parties interested in the well functioning of higher education.

Some of the main objectives are to identify and analyse key issues, challenges and appropriate responses regarding the present situation concerning the existing  accountability mechanism of the governing bodies in the public universities from Timisoara, to develop a coalition based on four Task Groups that will work on elaborating, implementing and monitoring an accountability framework of the governing bodies in the four public universities.

These objectives will be achieved by organizing a survey in Timisoara University Center on the existing policies of the governing bodies regarding the accountability of the decision making, trainings and workshops, elaborating a guide for Accountable Governance in Higher Education and implementing the common framework for accountable governance.

The project <Good Governance in Public Universities> uses the partnerships created with the state universities from Timisoara, the student organisations and informal groups, and answers to priorities identified in the activities carried out in 2005 and 2006 during the <Transparency and Integrity in Higher Education> project.

For more information please contact us at 221471/221472, Ilona Mihaies, executive president (imihaies@regionalnet.org) or Valeriu Lingurar, project coordinator (vlingurar@regionalnet.org).

The project is implemented with the financial support of the Trust for Civil Society in Central and Eastern Europe.
