IMP@CT is a monthly electronic newsletter published by the Euroregional Center for Democracy (CED), Romania. It contains announcements and information on funding opportunities and upcoming events addressing NGOs and institutions in South Eastern Europe. IMP@CT is part of Democracy Online  (http://resource.regionalnet.org), a CED program that gathers, updates and distributes information relevant for the democratic developments in the region and for the cross-border co-operation, in order to stimulate and improve partnerships. TRAINING SESSIONS FOR NGOs/INSTITUTIONS – STRATEGY DEVELOPMENT               

Application Deadline: February 25, 2002 (for the first session)  

 

OBJECTIVES: to extend skills and abilities in order to ensure appropriate project management and development of partnership projects.

GOALS:  

 - Training of leaders of NGOs and public institutions from South Eastern European countries, in order to increase the quality of their programs.

 - Providing professional development and assistance for consolidating organizational structure, so that the NGOs and public institution be able to elaborate long-term strategies on viability and self-sustainability.

Barents Group of KPMG Consulting and the IRIS Center announce
Regional Think Tank Partnership Program

Barents Group of KPMG Consulting and the IRIS Center announce the Regional Think Tank Partnership Program. The objective of the program is to enhance and strengthen capacity of Russian and East/Central European economic think tanks through professional collaboration, joint policy studies and outreach activities. Funding for the program is provided by USAID. The program will support multi-national partnerships of think tanks implementing applied analytical projects in various fields of post-communist economic transition, development, and public policy making. Partnerships will provide for professional exchanges, comparative analyses, collective outreach and dissemination of policy conclusions, assessments of reform strategies, and advocacy efforts. Each partnership will normally include think tanks from Russia, Central and Eastern Europe, and the West (primarily, but not exclusively, from the US. Think tank partnerships will be invited to submit grant proposals to the program (a request for proposal will be circulated shortly). The Program is designed for three years and is offering annual grants up to $70 000 per partnership project.

The European Commission announces

Call for proposals for RTD, demonstration, and combined RTD/demonstration projects in the framework of  IST Program

Application Deadline: February 21, 2002

 

The program is structured on 4 main Key Actions:

Key Action I - SYSTEMS AND SERVICES FOR THE CITIZEN

The priority for KA I is to enable European users (citizens, businesses, public authorities) to take advantage of the recent advances in ubiquitous computing, ubiquitous communication and intelligent interfaces to improve access to and delivery of general interest services

Key Action II - NEW METHODS OF WORK AND ELECTRONIC COMMERCE

Key Action II will reinforce European Union policies and priorities as set out in the Lisbon, Stockholm and Gothenburg summits, by ensuring that Europe plays a prominent role in shaping and capitalizing on the next wave of work and business innovations.

Key Action III - MULTIMEDIA CONTENT AND TOOLS

The aim of this work is to improve the functionality, usability and acceptability of future information products and services, to enable linguistic and cultural diversity and contribute to the valorization and exploitation of Europe's cultural patrimony, to stimulate creativity, and to enhance education and training systems for lifelong learning. Work will cover new models, methods, technologies and systems for creating, processing, managing, networking, accessing and exploiting digital content, including audio-visual content.

Key Action IV - ESSENTIAL TECHNOLOGIES AND INFRASTRUCTURES

Key Action IV covers the development of the essential component technologies and integrated systems and networks underpinning today’s converging industries and infrastructures. The Key Action is designed to build on today's European strengths in communications and network technologies, digital broadcasting, consumer electronics, software and embedded systems, and service concept innovation

i2Foundation Grants
Application deadline: February 25, 2002

The i2 Foundation is dedicated to promoting advancements in education, technology, environmental practices, medicine and economic opportunity through programs that improve the quality of life and create a healthier society. One of the major priorities of the i2 Foundation is to contribute to society through the development and education of children and youth. The foundation, however, recognizes that issues are complex and interconnected and therefore is open to receiving proposals related to a wide array of issues including: poverty, hunger, illiteracy, education, youth violence, violence against women, early child development, environmental preservation, scientific research and improved healthcare. Grants will range in size from $5,000 to $50,000 (U.S. dollars). Grants are for one year. An application form is not required. Applications should consist of a cover letter, a proposal and other supporting documents. The cover letter and proposal must be sent via email only. OPEN SOCIETY INSTITUTE announces

Employment Re-entry Initiative For Ex-Offenders

Application Deadline: March 1, 2002

 

The purpose of this request for proposals is to stimulate practical solutions to the problem of re-entry and re-integration of ex-offenders, for whom getting and maintaining jobs and securing sustainable income is a major obstacle. The target groups for this project include ex-prisoners and near prisoners (participants of alternative sentencing programs). New initiatives, proposed by organizations and institutions that have first hand experience with the problem, and who demonstrate willingness and ability to develop employment and self-employment assistance services are strongly encouraged to participate. Funding preference will be given to organizations that integrate employment into a complete process (i.e., acquisition of clients, life skills, basic / trade skills, living accommodations, transitional and “long term” employment) of ex-offender reintegration within the program.  Partnerships between specialized service providers and employment / self-employment service providers are encouraged. Up to $40,000 for one year, with an opportunity for continued support for another year if the project meets its stated goals and objectives. The applicant must be able to provide co-funding from its own resources of 20% of the value of the requested support (the matching can be in-kind or cash contributions to the project).

The Regional Environmental Center  announces:

Call for NGO Cooperative Environmental Project Proposals

Application deadline: March 18, 2002

 

The NGO Cooperative Environmental Projects Grants program aims to strengthen civil society by supporting environmental projects contributing to democratic public involvement and the development of concrete tools and mechanisms of sustainable development. Firstly, the grant will be given only to NGOs working on cooperative projects. NGOs from at least two different countries will work together on an environmental issue that affects them both. Secondly, projects should address transboundary or region-wide environmental problems. Projects should not exceed 13 months. Maximum funding available per project is EUR 35,000 from a total grant fund of EUR 375,000. Registered non-profit, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, FYR Macedonia, Romania, and Yugoslavia may apply for the cooperative grant. NGOs currently running a cooperative project supported by the REC Head Office are not eligible for funding under this call.

The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands announces

Ramsar Small Grants Fund for Wetland Conservation and Wise Use

Application Deadline: March 31, 2002

 

The fund was created in 1990 in order to provide assistance for wetland conservation and wise use initiatives in developing countries and (since 1996) countries with economies in transition. Its allocations are not intended to support major projects traditionally covered by larger funding agencies.  The wise use concept has been defined as "the sustainable utilization of wetlands for the benefit of humankind and compatible with the maintenance of the natural properties of the ecosystem"

The Open Society Institute-Budapest announces

Roma Literary Awards Program

Application Deadline: April 1, 2002

  The purpose of the awards program is threefold: (a) to promote artistically excellent prose and poetry written by Central and Eastern European Roma; (b) to promote the Romany language through literature; and, (c) to broaden local public access to the excellence and diversity of the literary arts in their own countries. Awards will be based solely on artistic excellence and artistic merit of the work that is submitted. Work may be submitted in Romany or in the national language of the country of citizenship of the author. An award of $5,000 in each of the four categories listed below is planned. Up to two short-listed finalists in each of the four categories may receive awards of $1,000 each. The four eligible categories are: Fiction, Creative Nonfiction, Poetry and Translation into Romany.

The Council of Europe, Directorate of Youth and Sport announces:

Youth Programme Pilot Projects on Human Rights Education

Application deadline: April 1, 2002 and July 1, 2002

 

 

By funding pilot projects on human rights education through the European Youth Foundation, the Directorate of Youth and Sport seeks to actively contribute to the inclusion of human rights education in youth work practice and to encourage innovative practices and partnerships, both in formal and in non-formal education contexts. Selected projects can be funded up to a maximum of 7.600 € and must be realised between January and December 2002. A maximum of 80% of the grant will be paid following the confirmation of acceptance of the grant; the remaining balance will be paid according to the rules of the European Youth Foundation upon reception and approval of the report and final accounts of the project.

International Institute for Communication and Development and infoDev announce

The ICT Stories Project 2002 Competition

Application Deadline: April 15, 2002

The ICT Stories objective is to capture the learning process that accompanies the introduction and implementation of ICTs in a project in exemplary stories. These stories describe good practices and lessons learned from contributors' experiences. To motivate story owners to share their knowledge, IICD and infoDev launched an annual competition. An internationally acclaimed ICT Stories jury selects the winning stories from a growing database. The submitted projects should : involve important issues in the field of ICT and development; use ICT in a new way: it may use state-of-the-art technology; basic ICTs in a creative way, or a combination of ICT and traditional media; have a significant effect on the sector it is applied to and serve as a model for other initiatives.  Creativity is encouraged. Stories should not exceed 1500 words. The annual contest winners participate in an international ICT event to present their story to the public.

European Commission announces

DAPHNE Program

Application Deadline: April 26, 2002

 

Daphne Program (2000-2003) is a community program financing prevention measures against child, youth and women violence by:

-Promoting collaboration between NGOs and institutions, public authorities working in the field of preventing and stopping violence

-Informing the public about preventing violence against children and women (including trafficking for sexual exploit).

Available budget is 6 million EURO in 2002. Candidate countries can participate in the program only as partners, without receiving directly funds from the European Commission.  Partnerships of at least two organizations from two different countries are eligible.

  The program is designed to promote the exchange of economic knowledge, to advance scientific understanding and to stimulate the creation of networks through international conferences. Only participants whose papers have been refereed and accepted by the conference organizers will be considered for funding. EFES 2002- International Festival for Economy and Business

May 3 – 8, 2002, Podgorica, Montenegro

EFES 2002 will gather economics students from all of the ex-Yugoslavia countries. In addition to lectures in economics, marketing, entrepreneurship, economics and lectures on the rights and position of women in the Balkans, the students will participate in a competition in marketing (presentation - advertising of products) and also a competition in general economics; substantial prizes will be given to the winners. EFES 2002 will also organize for its participants a round table entitled “Overcoming Obstacles Between Students of the Balkans” with proposals for solutions and debate on the rights and position of women in our Region. For all participants, all accommodation costs are covered; there is no fee to pay. Also, every participant should bring traveling tickets; because there is a chance that organization team cover your traveling costs (bus and train).

European Youth Exchange Seminar “SITUATION AND PERSPECTIVES OF YOUNG PEOPLE FROM MINORITY BACKGROUND IN MACEDONIA”

In Transitum Project

Application deadline: August 1, 2002

 

In Transitum offers literary translators a stay in the country of the language from which they translate for a period of between two weeks and one month. They can work on a translation, do research in libraries and institutes, meet with the author of the work they translate or generally explore the literary scene in the country. In Transitum offers the translator accommodation and a daily allowance. Travel costs and the costs of documentation are also covered. In Transitum supports professional translators translating literature into and from the languages of the following countries: Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Macedonia, Romania, Slovenia, Turkey and Yugoslavia.

Peacebuilding, Globalisation and Social Justice – Summer Peace Training

Pristina Summer University 2002 - Apply Now to Teach

July 15 - August 2 2002, Pristina, Kosovo

The program will bring together regional & international professors and lecturers for a period of three weeks and will provide about 30 courses and workshops in the field of humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. In addition, public discussions, lectures etc. will be organized on prominent issues in Kosovar and (South) East European society. Generally, all courses should be instructed in English or Albanian. Highly interactive teaching methods, which stimulate critical thinking and promote discussion, have priority. Each course will be co-taught by the visiting professor and a local teaching staff member. The Academic Training  Association  will partially or completely reimburse expenses incurred traveling to the PSU. ATA and the University of Pristina will provide housing. Visiting professors will teach pro bono, but will be paid a daily allowance, or per diem of 15 Euro per teaching day.

The Slovenian National YOUTH Agency „MOVIT” announces the creation of  an electronic database at its web-pages for youth NGOs in South East Europe. Greifswald International Students Festival

June 1-9 , 2002, Greifswald, Germany

  The first "Greifswald International Students Festival" will be a summit of the next generation, which makes dialogs and exchange of different views possible, and surmount the limits of prejudice and discrimination. In June 2002, approximately 450 students from all over the world will come together in Greifswald, a city in the North of Germany. In preparation of the festival, the participants will be in frequent contact with their international group leaders and research topics like Sustainable Development, Peace Building and New and Independent Media.

ECMI NGO Network for the Improvement of Interethnic Relations in the Republic of Macedonia

  The European Centre for Minority Issues (ECMI) based in Flensburg, Germany, is pleased to announce the official launch of the "ECMI NGO Network for the Improvement of Interethnic Relations in the Republic of Macedonia" and of the "ECMI Regional NGO Centres" in Skopje. The overall aim of the ECMI NGO Network is to enhance the cooperation of local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) towards the improvement of interethnic tolerance, respect for differences and dialogue among all those living in the Republic of Macedonia.  The ECMI NGO Network now consists of about 40 domestic NGOs representing all major ethnic communities in the country.
